What is a Midwife?

Midwives are highly trained primary healthcare professionals who provide a range of services to clients and newborns. When you are under the care of a midwife for your pregnancy, your prenatal care follows the same schedule as it would with any other provider. Your team of midwives will provide care during labour and birth and for the first six weeks postpartum. Midwives look after the client and the newborn during the post partum period. Typically, clients and newborns are discharged from midwifery care when they are 6-8 weeks postpartum.

Do I have access to a Midwife?

Midwives are part of the Ontario healthcare system, and their services are funded by the Ministry of Health. Ontario residents who are not covered by OHIP can still receive midwifery care with no charge.

Finding a Midwife

It is best to contact a midwifery practice group as soon as you find our you are pregnant. The midwives working in the following practice groups have an appointment at the Ottawa Birth and Wellness Centre.

To be taken into care, visit a midwifery practice group website listed to the right to fill out an intake form.

For more information on midwives and the midwifery model of care, visit the Association of Ontario Midwives and the College of Midwives of Ontario.
